The Bright Moon CH5
“It’s like this, daughter…”
The weather was getting colder by the day, and the wind was howling on Xu Qinguo's end. His voice was quite cool-headed, telling her that he didn't have enough money to go to the train station, so he bought a ticket to a small third-tier city where he didn't know anyone.
Xu Can listened quietly and interrupted his complaints calmly.
"Dad, why don't you go to a construction site and see if they need any help? Either way just find some work for now."
"It's almost the New Year. I don't know if I can find anything, but I'm looking."
Xu Qinguo sighed and changed the subject, "I'll call again if I manage to find a job, my phone credit is running low."
Xu Can replied with a soft "en."
"Daughter.."
After a pause, he continued, "Daddy is really useless isn’t he…"
Xu Can pressed her lips together, eager to end the call quickly. "I really don't have any money on hand."
"Dad knows, Dad knows...you take care of yourself. During New Years the debt collectors will probably be gone as well. Don’t go home now and don’t worry about the things at home. Remember, you’re Daddy’s only daughter. Eat well, and don't stay up too late..."
"I know all that."
Xu Can hung up the phone.
The dormitory window had been closed tightly by Chen Aiyuan, not letting in a bit of wind. The curtains were still open, hanging softly on the floor. The light quietly streamed in through the balcony glass, tiny dust particles floating in the air.
Normally just hearing her father's voice made her feel irritated.
But after hanging up, Xu Can stood up and paced back and forth in the empty dormitory for a while before sitting down again.
Her heart felt a bit sour and ached.
She sat quietly, thinking about his voice on the phone. With the New Year approaching, it would be hard to find any work on the construction site. Her father had no degrees, no skills, and was even hiding from debt collectors. Could he sleep well? Did he have enough to eat?
Xu Can closed her eyes for a while, then saw the draft paper on the desk, suddenly recalling her childhood.
Maybe because she didn't sleep well last night; her thoughts kept drifting.
She remembered when she was just in kindergarten. The teacher asked everyone to bring their own crayons for drawing, but she didn't have any at home. Her grandfather told her to steal some from the other kids, while her grandmother gave her a little money. In reality with that amount there was no way she could buy any.
Her grandfather even said, "She's going to get married off anyway. What’s the point of buying them for her?"
Xu Can, being young and naive, didn’t fully understand, but she was still sad when she couldn't buy the crayons. When she told her grandmother the money wasn't enough, her grandmother just brushed her off.
Her father came home drunk, found little Xu Can crying under the covers, and asked why she had cried into a flower.
When he found out, he pulled her out of bed still in her nightwear and took her to a general store that was already closed, banging on the door until they opened it and bought her two boxes of the most beautiful crayons.
On the way home, he taught her how to sing, even though he was tone-deaf.
Her father always smelled of alcohol, but his embrace was strong and secure.
He took her to the park and occasionally to kindergarten, always carrying her, from when she was born until she was seven. Even other families didn't spoil their sons as much.
"You’re the only daughter Daddy has."
Xu Can sniffed, sighed, and gripped the pen in her hand, trying to refocus on her textbook.
She had 100,000 yuan in her account.
In her previous life, after helping her father pay off his debts, he did work hard for a long period of time. He didn’t gamble again or cause trouble, and even sent her some living expenses from time to time.
……
Xu Can doodled on the draft paper, unconsciously trying to sort out the timeline of significant events in her previous life.
Not many major events actually occurred in the next two years.
She suddenly remembered that the stock market would see significant movement this year. In her past life, she had just paid off her father's debts and wanted to earn more money, so she took a job at the internal exchange department over winter break. She had handled document translations and consultations from parents.
One parent was obsessed with the stock market and talked to her about the stocks that had been rising since last year.
She didn’t understand the technical aspects of the stock market, but she knew it was a zero-sum game.
A modern battlefield for legally taking money from others, a modern gladiator arena.
That parent enthusiastically explained how falling oil prices were affecting stock market fluctuations and confidently predicted how much more the stocks would rise, even assuring her that even blindly investing in the stock market would yield great returns.
Naturally, Xu Can smiled and politely dismissed it, not taking it seriously.
Who would’ve thought that everything that parent had said turned out to be true.
Afterwards the stock market really did surge in value, with all the news channels broadcasting the arrival of a bull market… until it eventually crashed. (TN: bull market)
She didn’t know how much that parent had made, but her boss at the international exchange department mentioned making a fortune by investing in stocks. She had entered midway during the surge, investing two houses worth of fortune in and fished up enough money for four houses.
Some people use money to make money, for them making money was too easy
Two years had passed since then. She didn’t remember the exact figures, but she remembered the stocks kept rising until June. It wasn’t until mid-June that the stocks started plummeting. Investing before then was guaranteed to be profitable.
Xu Can was tempted by this idea.
She went online and spent about ten minutes understanding the basic operations. Then, she gathered her ID and bank card and went out to open a brokerage account.
Deciding which stocks to buy was the tricky part.
In her hands was 100,000 yuan in spare cash. It wasn’t much, but it wasn’t little either. She carefully selected ten stocks, including four familiar names: XX Intelligence, XX Electronics, XX Cloud Commerce, and XX Technology.
These stocks, from emerging industries she found familiar, were likely safe bets.
The remaining six were meticulously chosen. Although she wasn’t an expert in finance, she studied chemistry and was well-informed about the latest developments in pharmaceutical technology. XX Pharmaceuticals and XX Medicine were well-known in the industry.
She knew what these companies were doing.
After finalising her selections and transferring the 100,000 yuan from her account, she breathed a sigh of relief.
Now, there was no turning back.
The money was in the stock market, and she considered it gone. Even if this 100 000 yuan ended up like scattering salt into the sea, she would never give her father another cent.
